Glossary

AltRefNo

Some of the documents and files in the collection have old reference numbers which are no longer used. All old numbers have been recorded in the Alternative Reference Number (AltRefNo) field. In some cases the material has been split across two or more separate series.


ArchiveRefNum

The reference you will need when requesting further information or to view material.


File

A group of related records within a series. For example the minutes of the TfL Board for a particular year.


Item

One item within a series, for example a single photograph, with its date, such as a photograph of a station.


Level

This is the archival term for where the record can be found in the catalogue structure.


Series

A series is a group of files that have been received from or created by a business area. A series can contain any number of files and items. Series LT000315 for example contains some 10,198 files. All records within the collection belong to a specific series and this is the level at which more contextual information will be recorded.


SysID

Used to electronically arrange the records. Provides a link to the complete listings of a particular series.
